With the different options for kitchen flooring, choosing one can sometimes be a difficult decision. It doesn’t help that even within a certain kind of flooring there are also different colors and designs you can choose from.
If you are one of those who are confused about the right flooring for your kitchen, you can start the process of selection by taking a look at your wallet, as not all flooring materials cost the same. Normally, stones and hardwoods are more expensive than other flooring materials. By checking your finances, you can at least eliminate floors that are beyond your budget.
Next is consider how much time you and your family normally spend in the kitchen. A busy kitchen where mom cooks most meals, dad reads the papers, and the children do their homework will need a floor that is durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. On the other hand, if you eat out more often than not, or your cooking consists mostly of microwave cooking, durability may be less of a concern.
Take stock of your kitchen appliances and gadgets. If they are mostly of an antique or retro design, such as a manual burr coffee grinder made of wood and cast iron hand crank instead of an electric grinder, glass tiles may not be appropriate. Consider wood in such a case, or if it is beyond your budget, wood laminates or vinyl with wood designs.
The color of your floor should not clash with that of the walls and cabinets, and its designs should not dominate those of the other items in the kitchen. They should, instead, complement each other. You can use some of the colors or patterns on the walls or cabinets for your floor. If you tend to change décor periodically, consider a floor with neutral colors.
Remember that flooring cost is not limited to the materials. Opting for hardwood or glass tile floors may require professional help. If you want to save on this, think of vinyl tiles or click-and-lock laminate flooring.
