With the many choices of beautiful materials for a kitchen floor, choosing among them could be rather difficult. And as if this is not confusing enough, these materials, particularly ceramic, glass, and vinyl tiles, come in a myriad of colors, ranging from black to white and all the colors and hues in between. Depending on your perspective, this can be either bewildering or fun. You can make it fun by following a few guidelines and recommendations from experts and other homeowners.
The color of your kitchen floor can make a significant impact on the overall appearance and feel of your kitchen. If it is too dark, it can make the kitchen look cramped and confined. On the other hand, if it is too light, it can easily show off dirt. This does not mean, however, that you cannot use very dark or very light colors. If your kitchen is huge, you do not have to worry about dark color making it look small. Conversely, if your kitchen is small, you may want to use very light colors to make it look more spacious and airy.
Bold colors can be exciting and striking when new, but often the novelty wears off and then they begin to look garish or gaudy and just lose their appeal. They can also overwhelm the other items in your kitchen such as your beautifully crafted cupboards, elegantly designed curtains, and high-tech convection oven, cappuccino maker, and wine refrigerator, drawing attention away from them.
Choose colors that are in harmony with those of the walls, countertops, and other items in the kitchen. If you choose a monochromatic scheme, use varying shades of the color to avoid monotony. You do not want to have a single color in your entire kitchen. To help avoid having a flat and dull flooring when using this scheme, install a rug or floor mat to provide a break on a continuity of tiles.
Having different yet complementary colors adds vibrancy to the kitchen, and can promote cheerful moods. The use of earth colors, or natural materials in their original colors, can make the kitchen feel homier and more laid-back.
When visiting kitchen floor stores, ask the sales staff to lay down your prospective materials on the floor and view them from a distance visualizing your cupboards and appliances in the background. If at all possible, bring home a few samples and put them down on your kitchen floor.
