While there is a great deal of satisfaction in accomplishing your home improvement projects on your own, there are a few of them that are often beyond the skills of the average do-it-yourselfer. Also, they may require the use of special tools involving a lot of training and practice before they can be used proficiently. Finally, you simply may not have the time to embark on a large project that may take several days to accomplish. In these cases, hiring a contractor to do the job for you may be your best option. Remodeling your kitchen floor can be one of these projects. This is especially true if your want to rip off your old floor and install new wood flooring in its stead.
You can find plenty of wood floor suppliers on the Internet but an actual visit to their shops is necessary so you can actually see and feel their wood samples. Ask the supplier to present different types of wood coated with different types of sealers because the latter can have varied effects on how the wood looks. By all means, visit different suppliers and compare prices, but keep in mind that in the case of wood, the cheapest is often not the best.
Often, suppliers can recommend installers. Be sure, however, that they have previously worked together and had a satisfactory relationship in the past. This is to assure you that they will not blame each other in the event that your floor will turn out to be substandard, with the supplier claiming the installer did a poor job and the installer blaming poor materials.
Alternatively, you can also start by looking for an accomplished installer with several years in the business. Look for a small or medium-sized business, preferably family-owned, as these are more likely to deal with you personally rather than through salespeople, who, naturally, have their commissions added to your cost. With these businesses, you are likely to be talking with the installers themselves who would, presumably, know what they are talking about.
Often, they also have their own preferred and trusted suppliers and they can direct you to them. Some of them may even have their own samples at their offices so you will not need to visit the supplier’s shop.
You can also ask the business about their past projects, preferably the last floors they have installed, and see if you can visit them. This can tell you a lot about how they work and give you an idea how your floor will look if your hire them.
